Against folksonomies: indexing blogs and podcasts for corporate knowledge management.
Corporate blogs and podcasts belong to the tools of public relations and to the internal and external exchange applications for employees, customers and other stakeholders. They are devices for corporate collaboration as well. They are carrying and producing information and knowledge at the same time. That is why their maintenance and administration in corporate organisations is a task of knowledge management. To make the use of the blogs' and podcasts' content effective and to be able to employ it for later applications they need to be indexed. So far only folksonomies were used for their indexing. But folksonomies lack terminological checks and relations between tags. Therefore, they are unfit for corporate knowledge management. In order to solve this problem the Layer Model will be introduced and implemented. This model is able to respond well to heterogeneous data like blogs and podcasts. It puts the data source in the centre of attention and judges its relevance. Then the Layer Model offers several indexing methods depending on different indexing qualities and depths to face the diverse relevancies of the data sources. A folksonomy can be used additionally to observe the user's parlance and to add new words and relations immediately to given taxonomies. Moreover, the Layer Model can be combined with the field of Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT) to index blogs and podcasts and for forming information clusters automatically. Its task is to search for coherent topics within blog posts and podcasts, to detect unknown topics and to form new clusters, to search for known topics in new posts and to summarize the posts with the same topics.
